Brennevin Aquavit is Iceland’s signature spirit, thanks to the cool and fresh Icelandic water and savory flavor of caraway. The spirit was introduced in 1935 when Prohibition was partially lifted, and the folks at Brennevin chose to keep the label black to make it intentionally unappealing so the brand wouldn’t get too popular. Well, turns out, the opposite happened (oh the irony) and Brennevin blew up. The ultimate spirit to plug and play whenever you want to give your bottle of gin a break. Brennevin is colloquially known throughout Iceland as “The Black Death.” Aquavits are grain or potato based spirits, infused with caraway and dill instead of juniper berries. Caraway is one of the few spices that grow in Iceland’s harsh climate.
